The Lorena's Cross was adopted as the international symbol against tuberculosis in the first International Conference in 1902. Since the first times, the Red Cross with double bar has been used as a symbol in the quest against evil, and now is used by the associations against tuberculosis of at least 55 countries as their symbol in the quest against the disease.

The double-bar cross has appeared in oriental reliquaries since the 7th century. The crusaders found it in Christian monuments from before the conquest of the Holy Land and since then it was used as a symbol for Jerusalem.

When in 1099 Godofredo of Bouillon captured Jerusalem and took possession of the Holy Grave, he added the cross to his banner, as did also the King of Hungary when he returned from the crusades.

This shape of the cross was always recognized by the people of this time as the shape of "The True Cross". They believed that the first bar was used for the words IHS NA IUD (Jhesus Naxarenus Rex Iudeorum), and with the second bar forming the actual cross.

In the 15th century the De Guisa family, the most prominent branch of the House of Lorena, was still using the cross in its coat of arms and in currency, in memory of its ancestor Godofredo of Bouillon. The double-bar cross became famous in all East Europe, under the name of Lorena's Cross.

Joanne of Arc, a 15th century French girl, who fought to take the English out of France, was burned by them in the stake and later canonized as a Saint. She used the Lorena's Cross in her banner.

In 1487, the cross was used as a symbol of the resistance movement in Lorena, against the occupation of Charles the Fearless.

This precedent was followed in modern times when it was chosen by General De Gaulle as the emblem of the free France in its resistance against the nazis. And so, all over the years, the red double-bar cross has become a symbol of the crusade against the evil and the oppression.

It was doctor Gilbert Sersiron of Paris, who suggested in October of 1902 that it could be used as an international emblem for the fight against tuberculosis, explaining his idea with these words: "The Red Cross with double horizontal line, is a symbol of understanding, peace and brotherhood, that can carry our message to the most distant places of the world. Used as emblem in the daily fight and in its journey through the world, it can turned into a triumphant march, that slowly rejects an invader that decimates our army, and vanish the suffering tears of mankind, leaving them without just reasons to flow".
